How Often Should You Rotate Your Tires?

When you know how many miles to rotate tires for, you can enjoy superior performance on every drive. In general, you’ll want to rotate your tires every 5,000 miles or so; however, there are certain circumstances for which a more frequent tire rotation interval will be appropriate. If you need to know when to rotate tires, you can find the answer in this comprehensive guide.

When to Rotate Tires

So, how often should you rotate your tires? There are two basic ways to come to the right conclusion:

Know Your Tire Rotation Interval: AWD vs. FWD/RWD

Although front-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive vehicles can go slightly longer in between rotations, all Land Rover SUVs come equipped with all-wheel drive. Although a 7,500-mile interval might be appropriate for some cars and crossovers, you’ll need to schedule service more often if you want to ensure that your Land Rover always delivers peak performance.

If you’ve been doing a lot of towing or off-roading, your tires may wear down at an accelerated rate! Consider scheduling tire rotations more frequently.

Check Your Tread Depth

If you don’t know when your last tire rotation took place, there’s one easy way to tell if you could benefit from this service. Since the purpose of tire rotation is to even out the differences between your tires, checking the tread depth of each tire should be your first step. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Pick up a tire tread gauge from our parts department. Our Annapolis location is easy to reach from anywhere near Edgewater or Crofton.
  2. Measure each tire at multiple locations along the tread.
  3. If there’s a difference of more than 1/16 of an inch between (for example), your front tires and your rear tires, it’s time to schedule service!

Although it isn’t technically related to tire rotation, you should also be on the lookout for tire treads that have a lot of depth at one location, and significantly less depth at another. Uneven wear across the surface of a tire could indicate serious problems with your vehicle’s steering or suspension systems.

Why Should You Rotate Your Tires?

Why is it important to know when to rotate tires? Simply put: uneven tires are guaranteed to have a negative impact on your vehicle’s performance. Here’s exactly what we mean:

  • Uneven tread depth reduces your traction, so you won’t be able to accelerate or brake as quickly.
  • Uneven tread depth may also negatively impact your fuel economy for the same reason.
  • If your ride has been bumpier or louder than normal, uneven tread depth may be to blame. You’ll enjoy a smoother Severna Park ride with regular rotation.

Last but not least, it’s important to point out that your tires won’t wear down at the same rate unless you’re scheduling regular rotation! Taking care of this important service on schedule makes it easier to replace all of your tires at the same time
