How To Check the Oil Level In a Car

checking the engine oil

While you can always depend on the technicians at our service department, have you ever wondered how to check a car’s oil at home in Edgewater? If you own a Land Rover, the process is simple! Whether your Land Rover uses an electronic oil monitor or a traditional dipstick, we’ll break down the process of how to check the oil level in a car like a pro.

Your new Land Rover might come equipped with an electronic oil monitoring system. This monitor displays your current oil levels directly onto the dashboard, so there’s no guesswork needed.

  • Park on level ground and turn off your ignition. Wait ten minutes or so to allow your oil to settle to the back of the pan.
  • Turn your key to position one or press the “START” button without the brake pedal engaged. This will turn your electronics on without starting the engine.
  • Use the small display beneath the gauge cluster to cycle through options. You’ll need either “SERVICE MENU” or “VEHICLE INFORMATION”.
  • Choose “OIL LEVEL” on the next screen. Your oil level will appear on the dashboard.

If the level is low, you can locate the oil reservoir beneath the hood. If you’re going to go the DIY route, make sure to pick up an oil product that’s been approved for use in Land Rover vehicles. If you need help, ask an expert at our parts department.

If it’s close to your next oil change, or if your level has shifted rapidly, it’s a smart idea to schedule service as soon as possible and let us take care of everything.

How to Check Oil with a Dipstick

If you have an older Land Rover in Crofton, you might not have an electronic oil monitor. Instead, you’ll need to get under the hood to learn how to check the oil level in a car.

  • Park on level ground and turn off your ignition. Wait ten minutes or so to allow your oil to settle to the back of the pan.
  • Find the dipstick and pull it out. Clean it off with a rag, noting the color and consistency of the oil. If it looks dark or dirty, schedule your service for an oil change.
  • Insert the dipstick back into the sheath and pull it out again. See where the oil level falls between the “MIN” and “MAX” lines.

If you notice that you’re running low on oil, you can fill up your oil on your own. Just pop the hood and use a funnel to top off your oil levels. If you have any questions, your owner’s manual will give you directions specific to your Land Rover model.
