How to Prepare for an Electric Vehicle Home Charger

2022 Land Rover Range Rover Plug-In Hybrid

There are lots of benefits to driving an electric vehicle or plug-in hybrid like the new Range Rover – fewer trips to the gas station, a smaller carbon footprint than conventional hybrids, and less maintenance, just to name a few. But finding a conveniently located public charging station can still be a challenge for some Annapolis drivers, which is why many choose to charge their electric vehicle at home with an electric vehicle home charger. Perhaps you’re thinking about installing an electric vehicle home charging station. If so, keep reading to find out what to do before installing an electric vehicle charging station at home.

Do You Actually Need an Electric Vehicle Home Charging Station?

You might want to begin by determining whether you actually need an electric vehicle home charging station in order to charge your electric vehicle at home. For instance, do you plan on putting a lot of miles on your car during the day, or will you just be making short trips around Edgewater? The distance you drive on a daily basis will help determine which method of charging you need to use:

  • Public electric vehicle charging station – Your travels take you near charging stations. This method may take some planning.
  • Level 2 home charging – You drive more than 50 miles a day or need to charge your electric vehicle at home faster than overnight. This method requires installing an electric vehicle charging station at home.
  • Level 1 home charging – You drive less than 50 miles daily and are fine with charging your car overnight or longer. This method uses the cord that comes with the car and an existing outlet in your home. Keep in mind that this method is significantly slower than level 2 home charging, and is used by most EV owners as a backup method.

Before Installing an Electric Vehicle Charging Station at Home

More and more Crofton households have an electric vehicle home charger in the garage nowadays. Preparing your home for one is not difficult, but installing an electric vehicle charging station at home requires the services of a licensed electrician. Do not attempt to do this yourself. Follow these steps to prepare your home:

  • Purchase an electric vehicle home charging station
  • Clear out a spot in your garage for the electric vehicle charging station
  • Hire an electrician to inspect your home’s power supply and install the system
