How to Check Coolant Levels

car coolant service in engine

How do I check for coolant? What is coolant? These are questions that many Edgewater have asked themselves at least once or twice. Coolant is a fluid in your engine that transfers heat and regulates the engine’s temperature, keeping your engine from overheating. It also keeps your engine from getting too cold. The service department at Land Rover Annapolis can walk you through how to check coolant levels from your own home to keep your engine running like a top.

Checking the Coolant Reservoir

You shouldn’t have to actually open the radiator cap to check the coolant level. Each reservoir will have markings on the side that will say “full”. If the coolant in the reservoir reaches the “full” line, then you shouldn’t have to put in more coolant. If your coolant is below the “full” line, then you’ll need to take off the radiator cap and add more coolant for a 50/50 mix of coolant and water, depending on your vehicle make and model. You can find out what type of coolant you need in your owner’s manual.

It’s important to note that you should never remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot. Let your car sit for a few minutes to cool down before you ever touch the cap or anything under the hood.

When to See a Service Center

Now that you know how to check the coolant level, it’s important to know what to look for in the actual liquid. Coolant is thinner than oil, so if you notice a sludgy appearance in the coolant, you’ll want to schedule a service immediately. Sludgy coolant could mean an internal gas leak, which will gas the coolant to drain quickly and overheat the engine. You can easily schedule a service with Land Rover Annapolis to help you get back on the Crofton roads.

When to Change Coolant

Naturally, coolant levels deplete over time. It’s good practice to check up on the coolant levels every three to six months to know whether it’s time for a coolant change. You know what coolant is, but what does it look like? Usually, coolant is blue, green, yellow, or red. If you notice that your coolant is any other color, flush out the coolant and add new coolant to the reservoir.
